Every summer, someone gets the credit for a sparkling pool. Spoiler: it's not the person standing next to it holding a drink. It's a fibreglass tank sitting quietly in the corner that nobody has ever photographed.

Think about every pool party you've ever thrown. Someone complimented the water. You probably nodded, maybe gestured vaguely toward the chemicals shelf. Nobody walked over to the filter, patted it on the side, and said nice work mate. And yet that is exactly where the credit belongs. The sand filter is the thing doing the actual labour - pushing every litre of pool water through a bed of filter media, trapping the fine particles that make water look murky, and sending clean water back out the return jets. It does this on a loop, all day, every day, from September through to the end of February, in temperatures that have no business being polite.
Most pool owners think of water clarity as a chemistry problem. Add more chlorine. Adjust the pH. Shock it and hope. Sometimes that works. But when the water stays dull and cloudy no matter what you tip in, the filter is usually the one struggling, not the chemicals. A sand filter that's past its prime, or running on a pressure cycle that's too short, simply cannot do the job it was designed for. You end up chasing your tail with products that can't fix a mechanical problem. It's a bit like blaming the fridge for warm milk when the power's been off for a week.

After having a poor experience at another pool shop in the area I’m glad I found these guys. Fantastic service and I never feel it’s about the upsell and unnecessary purchases. They answer all my questions and offer no nonsense practical solutions. My pool has never looked better!

Really like the new owners. Helpful but not trying to over sell.

Great service from the new team. Due to construction I had the pool in disservice and it turned green and bits didnt look like they were working. I got great advice and within days I had a sparking pool again. Also very friendly and approachable which is awesome.

Fantastic service from Adam & the new owners at Poolside. They couldn’t have been more professional & punctual.
Russel Fowler
Fantastic Service from Poolside Newcastle, they were helpful with my issues and gave me plenty of advice.

Here is how to tell if your filter is the one waving a white flag. The most obvious sign is water that stays hazy even after a fresh dose of chlorine and a full pump cycle. If your chemistry is balanced but the water looks like weak tea, the filter is not clearing the fine particles the way it should. The second sign is shorter runs between backwashes. If you're backwashing more often than you used to, the pressure is building faster than normal, which means the filter media is either overloaded, degraded, or just genuinely tired. The third sign is weak return flow from your jets. If the water coming back into the pool has lost its punch, you've got a flow problem, and the filter is the first place to look. None of these symptoms get fixed by adding more chemicals. They get fixed by sorting out the filter.
When the filter itself is the problem, replacing it with something solid is the move that stops the cycle of guesswork. The Leisuretime 2 Fibreglass Sand Filter is built for exactly the kind of conditions Newcastle pools deal with from December through February: high UV, long run times, water temperatures that climb well past what the label on your chlorine tablet was expecting. The tank is spun woven fibreglass, which means it handles pressure and resists UV degradation far better than basic plastic alternatives. It won't fade, it won't deform, and it doesn't need you to fuss over it. The stainless steel clamp holds the tank together properly under pressure, the top diffuser spreads the incoming water evenly across the filter media so you get consistent filtration rather than channelling, and the six-function multiport valve gives you backwash, rinse, filter, waste, recirculate, and closed positions - which covers everything you need for normal operation and maintenance without having to reach for extra fittings or adapters.
The Leisuretime 2 comes in a range of sizes, so it matches the actual volume of your pool rather than just being close enough. Undersizing a filter is one of the more common mistakes people make, and it means the thing is working harder than it should from day one, which shortens its useful life and keeps your water quality lower than it needs to be. Getting the right size for your pool's volume is the difference between a filter that coasts through summer and one that struggles by January. If you're not sure what size suits your setup, that's exactly the kind of question worth asking before you buy rather than after.
So as Newcastle heads into what is shaping up to be a very warm spring and an even warmer summer, the sand filter is quietly doing what it always does. No days off. No complaints. No Instagram presence whatsoever. It just moves water, traps the rubbish, and sends clean water back where it belongs. The least anyone can do is make sure it's up to the job. Get in touch with the team at Poolside Newcastle and ask about the Leisuretime 2 range - because the pool party deserves better than a filter that's coasting on borrowed time.
