Get Your Pool Ready for Summer in 5 Easy Steps

The sun is shining, the days are getting longer, and the water is calling. Before you can take that first refreshing dip, it's time to get your pool ready for the summer season. With a little bit of effort now, you can ensure your backyard oasis is sparkling clean and ready for endless hours of fun.

1. A Thorough Clean is the First Step

Before you do anything else, it's time for a good clean. Start by removing your pool cover, giving it a good hose down, and letting it dry completely before you store it away. Then, use a skimmer to remove any leaves and debris from the water's surface. Give the pool walls and floor a good brush and vacuum to remove any dirt that has settled over winter. Don't forget to clean out the skimmer baskets as well.

2. Inspect Your Equipment

Now is the time to check that all your pool equipment is in good working order. Inspect the pump, filter, and heater for any signs of wear and tear or leaks. Make sure the filter is clean and ready to go. Depending on your filter type, this may involve cleaning a cartridge or backwashing a sand or diatomaceous earth (DE) filter. A clean filter is essential for keeping your pool water crystal clear.

3. Top Up the Water

Over the winter, the water level in your pool has likely dropped. Now is the time to top it up. The water level should be about halfway up the skimmer opening to allow for proper circulation.

4. Test and Balance the Water

This is a crucial step to ensure your pool is safe and comfortable for swimming. Use a water testing kit to check the chemical levels in your pool. You'll want to check the pH, total alkalinity, and calcium hardness. The ideal ranges are: * pH: 7.2 - 7.6 * Total Alkalinity: 80-120 ppm for concrete pools and 125-170 ppm for vinyl or fibreglass pools. * Calcium Hardness: 200-400 ppm.

Adjust the chemicals as needed to bring them within these ranges.

5. Shock the Pool

The final step is to "shock" your pool. This involves adding a higher dose of chlorine to the water to kill any lingering bacteria and algae. This will ensure your pool is properly sanitised and ready for swimming. After shocking the pool, run the filter for at least 8 to 10 hours to circulate the water. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when adding any chemicals to your pool.

By following these five simple steps, you can have your pool looking its best and ready for a summer of fun in the sun. With the hard work done, it's time to enjoy your beautiful, sparkling clean pool.
